Seka Electrical have comprehensive systems such as photographing the penetration before, during and after completion. When completed, a certification will be affixed close to the penetration detailing the penetration.

In New Zealand the areas most overlooked for fire stopping are the cable and pipe penetrations associated with the supply of power, data, water and waste-water. Pipes and cables will melt and burn in a fire leaving a hole that creates a chimney like effect which can cause fire and smoke to enter other areas of your building.

Fire Protection - Active and Passive

Fire protection within a building requires two types of protection - Active and Passive Fire Protection. Active Fire Protection relates to the detection and extinction of a fire whilst Passive Fire Protection is a barrier or shield, stopping the spread of fire from one area to another. Unprotected fire wall, barrier and fire resistance system penetrations are the major causes of rapid dangerous spread of smoke and fire in your building.

Most passive fire protection installation methods consist of using specialized intumescent materials such as firestop mortar, caulk, putties, pillows and blocks. When an intumescent product is exposed to the heat from a fire the material inside it expands many times its size blocking up any potential avenues for fire and smoke to escape through. The chemical reaction proves very useful as intumescent material remains flame resistant for an amount of time depending on the product.

This is what makes it passive, intumescents do not put out fires. They contain it and stop the spread. This means it gives you valuable time to escape with your life and limits damage caused to a building and assets by a fire.
